History

Gants Hill was a rural area until the early 20th century. Its name may originate from the "le Gant" family, who were present in the area as early as 1291. The area developed significantly with the construction of major roads in the 1920s and the extension of the London Underground Central line in the 1930s. The Gants Hill tube station, famous for its unique, barrel-vaulted concourse inspired by the Moscow Metro, opened in 1947.
